CATEGORY 7: EXPLORATION OR INVESTIGATION OF UNUSUAL PHENOMENA
No matter how deeply scientists investigate the mysteries of nature, it seems unlikely that they will ever explain all the mysteries since new ones continually arise. And that’s a good thing, for it reminds us that science alone can never fully explain life.
SITUATION 1: Strange lights begin to appear in the night sky—multicolored luminescence that forms weird shapes. Some think they’re a phenomenon like the northern lights, but they’re not and scientists have no idea what is causing them. A weather expert tests an outlandish theory and reaches an astonishing conclusion: The atmosphere may be changing to suit a rapidly evolving organism.
SITUATION 2: A farmer swears that a UFO has landed and buried itself in his field, but no one believes him. Then a friend agrees to investigate the strange noises emanating from the purported landing site. When he cannot locate anything, this friend asks a scientist to take a look.
SITUATION 3: Fruits that have been genetically engineered to grow larger and more flavorful have an unanticipated side effect: They alter people’s skin pigmentation and eye color. While scientists work to develop an antidote, societal dynamics begin to change dramatically.
SITUATION 4: Animals of all kinds have inexplicably begun to grow larger. Biologists suspect that an experimental growth hormone has entered the environment. The problem is urgent, and there doesn’t seem to be a limit on how large the animals can grow.
SITUATION 5: The mutant offspring of animals that had been irradiated during the era of atomic testing have been smuggled off a quarantined zone for analysis, but then an earthquake occurs and the animals escape into a heavily populated area.
SITUATION 6: Geologists investigating thermal vents in Yellowstone discover a new organism that seems to thrive on sulfur. Both the thermal vents and the organisms are proliferating, and the lead geologist worries that these organisms might pose a health threat.
SITUATION 7: Rumblings in the earth lead scientists to suspect an imminent earthquake, even though no faults are nearby. Further investigation leads to another possibility—that a magma chamber may rupture—and cause more damage than a conventional volcanic eruption would. Residents aren’t persuaded.
SITUATION 8: A fishing community panics when tens of thousands of fish float to the surface dead. Biologists work around the clock to determine the cause. It turns out that the villagers are responsible since they dumped chemicals that no one had thought were toxic into the water.
SITUATION 9: Something is hiding in the sewers of this European city; it regularly sneaks to the surface and goes unnoticed, except by a homeless person, who describes the creature as serpent-like. A team goes down to investigate and discovers an entire nest of the creatures.
SITUATION 10: Uncanny weather systems plague the country: Floods in arid regions, snowstorms in tropical regions, etc. Something besides global warming may be responsible: possibly a change in the earth’s magnetic field. A geophysicist investigates.
